Garner believes keeping eye on pennies now will pay dividends
Posted By BRIAN KELLY

Making music is serious business for Matt McFarland and his Garner bandmates.

The Hamilton, Ont., pop/rock trio meets monthly to not only talk finances, but how to deal with each other, personally.

Drummer McFarland, James Bloemendal (guitars, vocals) and Matt McKenna (piano, guitars, vocals) track everything from advance ticket sales versus door traffic to what colour T-shirts are most popular with fans.

"We're all very serious about wanting to make this something that is going to turn itself into a full-time job," said McFarland in a telephone interview from Brampton, Ont., earlier this week. "The reason why I think we're seeing success is because of the fact that we treat this like a business."

McKenna joined the band about a year after its formation. His musical background steered Garner in a new direction that saw the band's debut CD, It's About Time, include everything from rock to jazz and rhythm and blues.

"I guess when you add a different mixture in the band, things just instinctively start to go in an alternate direction," said McFarland. "(McKenna) had different influences. (He) started us off in the general direction that we're in now."

McFarland said the change in musical approach was amiable, with no tense times in the studio when recording their first album. "There was never any walls put up," he said. "(We) just started jamming on something and everybody jumped in with it."

Garner plays Loplops tonight.

The Garner boys would like to thank Brian for his great work with this.

We'll see you Sault Ste. Marie-ers tonight!

Regards,

McF

Westside Concert Theatre
p: 905.777.9777
434 King St W, Hamilton, ON
Google maps link, please click here.

Time:

- Doors open @ 7:30pm.
- Music Starts @ 8pm-ish.

Parking:

- Parking is to the left and across from the Theatre.

Tickets:

If you have already purchased tickets that is fantastic. We learned a few things from our last show at the Westside and have opted to have some tickets available at the door. So, rest assured, there will be some there for those last minute people.

Seating:

We have opted to go with Cabaret style seating to allow our camera people the freedom to move around a little more. This means that there will be tables and chairs set up but seats are not reserved. Therefore, it is first come first serve.

Questions:

If you have any questions regarding the evening, please e-mail garnerband@gmail.com. We are very prompt with regards to returning e-mail, so feel free to send your questions here.

Thanks so much for being there to send us off across Canada, we really appreciate all the support. It will be a great evening, see you there!

Regards,

The Garner boys.
